The Nantes-based Australian drummer Will Guthrie’s drum solos are unbelievable in their combination of head-nodding rhythmic intensity, hardcore physicality and unashamed virtuosity. At the same time as being full-on workouts they are thrillingly nuanced and driven by a synthesis of influences as diverse as chopped & screwed hip hop, rhythmic avant-jazz, noise, gamelan, and Carnatic music. Regardless of any heady reference points the sheer energy of this music makes it wildly fun.
Will has released on Black Truffle Records, Erstwhile, Editions Mego and many others, played with legends from Mark Simmonds and Roscoe Mitchell to Richard Dawson, Oren Ambarchi and Mark Fell, and founded Naarm’s celebrated institution, the Make It Up Club. After some knock-out sets more than a decade ago in Boorloo under Tura’s stewardship, we are thrilled to bring Will back to the west coast.
Flora Carbo is among the continent’s most recognised and exciting young jazz saxophonists, and an unbridled lover of music & music community. Her saxophone playing is grounded in melody and the voice-like qualities of the instrument. Flora’s solo sets piece together folk-like tunes, wobbly electronics & drum machines in a mix that recalls Arthur Russell’s evasiveness, the Art Ensemble of Chicago’s playfulness, the moody thrill of a late-night trad session, and the intimacy of singer-songwriter performance. The recipient of multiple awards and commendations for her involvement in the jazz scene, Flora’s recent solo performances sit in a new, emerging place in her broad practice.
Radiation are the duo of June Last & Nathan Kelly on synthesizers & guitar respectively, layering distorted string skronk and submerged melodic waves. Their recent cassette publications – on cryptic multimedia publication New Hesperia – are captivating, textured & mysterious.
