ROOTS: One Hundred Years of Walter Spies in Bali is a docufiction detailing the painter Walter Spies’ early visits to Bali and his spirit’s return. With Spies came tourism and modernity. The film tells a cinematically undiscovered story about Bali, its rise to the ‘Eldorado’ of global tourism and the desperate efforts of its people to preserve their cultural and identity in the furore of globalisation.
