Join us across four consecutive Tuesday night classes led by Josten, to listen, learn about and discuss experimental music from this continent.
“Experimental music from Australia has a documented history, but the paper trail is hard to follow. A cryptic Vimeo documentary, an article on a 90s website, and a festival program on
Archive.org can probably one be threaded together by someone who has been to enough shows in enough cities to have a sense of the oral tradition to begin with. This is all to find a few beyond-marginal artists who are considered vital by a handful of people and ignored by everyone else.
I think that this handful of people are right: The Australian scene is bonkers good. I don’t really know why. But I do know about some important music, people, places and projects that shaped it. So in this primer, I will do my best to do some of that threading, by inviting us to listen to a lot of important music together, and chat about the context it comes from.
I aspire to help you understand or even love the music. But I also want to share an inspiring history of radicalism both in terms of sound’s organisation and the culture around it, that I feel can help us be more courageous listeners/artists/organisers.”

Josten Myburgh is a composer and performer. They have worked with luminaries of experimental sound practice globally. They are co-director of Tone List and co-curator of the Audible Edge Festival of Exploratory Music.
